Senate Postpones Resumption, Announce New Date

The Senate, on Wednesday, October 2, swiftly passed both the first and second readings of a bill aimed at establishing the Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State.​


The bill, sponsored by Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC – Ekiti Central), seeks to provide comprehensive management and administration for the proposed institution.

During the session, Senator Bamidele led the debate, emphasizing the university’s potential impact on enhancing agricultural education and advancing tropical studies in Nigeria.

Senator Olarere Oyewunmi seconded the bill, underscoring its significance for national development, particularly in the agricultural sector.

The bill also received backing from prominent senators, including Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin and Senator Solomon Adeola, among others. Their support highlights the bill’s broad acceptance and the urgency of addressing educational and agricultural needs in the region.

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio conducted a voice vote, with senators overwhelmingly approving the rapid progression of the bill through the initial legislative stages.

Following the vote, the bill was referred to the Senate Committees on Agriculture and Tertiary Education and TETFUND. These committees are tasked with conducting detailed legislative work on the bill and are expected to report back to the plenary session within two weeks.

The establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies aims to foster significant advancements in agricultural education and research, aligning with Nigeria’s strategic goals to enhance food security and export in tropical products.
