The governors of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) concluded their meeting regarding the future of the party’s acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, without reaching a definitive resolution on Monday night.
The meeting, which commenced around 5 p.m. and lasted until just before 10 p.m., was convened to address the ongoing internal crisis that has plagued the party, leading to the suspension of several members of the National Working Committee (NWC), including Damagum.
Sources close to the discussions informed Daily Trust that the governors remain sharply divided over Damagum’s fate, with attempts to resolve the deadlock proving inconclusive.
A spokesman for one of the governors, who preferred to remain anonymous, revealed that a majority of the forum members advocated for adherence to the party’s constitution, which mandates that the position of national chairman should revert to the zone from which the previous chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu of Benue State, originated.
As the internal strife continues to unfold, the governors have decided to reconvene for further discussions today in Ondo State, where they are expected to attend the official flag-off of the PDP’s governorship campaign.
Currently, Damagum, along with National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), remains suspended, while a factional chairman claims to have taken over the control of the party.
