PSV Women’s Player Concedes Penalty For Handling The Ball While Appealing For Handball

A PSV women’s player conceded a penalty for handling the ball in the area as she appealed for a handball against an opponent.

In the KNVB Women’s Cup final, Janou Levels was adamant that the ball had struck the hand of an ADO Den Haag player as it bounced back to her.

The ball then looped in the air and Levels raised her hand aloft to signal for a handball. At the exact moment she did, the ball hit her hand and a penalty was awarded.

The decision from referee Shona Shukrula to give the spot-kick was perhaps a tad harsh but you can’t deny it was also an utterly hilarious sequence.

Levels’ blushes were spared, however, as the resulting penalty from Gwyneth Hendriks was saved by goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal in the 17th minute.

PSV would win the cup final 1-0, with a first-half strike from Joëlle Smits giving the team their first ever trophy.

In the league, PSV finished second to FC Twente in the play-off standings and secured qualification to next season‘s Champions League.

They will embark on the European campaign without star striker Smits though, as the 21-year-old is joining Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.
