Manchester United Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Criticised For Use OF Subs
Solskjaer started with his most attacking line up in Gdansk on Wednesday night, with Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani all starting.
However it didn’t translate to an all out attacking performance on the night, with United struggling to break Unai Emery’s side down for much of the 120 minutes.
And the five attacking players were on the pitch for most of that time as Solskjaer failed to make a substitution until the 100th minute, when Fred replaced Greenwood, whilst Villarreal made all five of their allowed subs in the 90 minutes.
Solskjaer eventually made five as well, with two coming on just for penalties, but left his extra one, for the added half an hour, on the bench.
The manager’s use of subs has been called into question before but, in the aftermath of David de Gea’s penalty miss, fans really turned on his in game management.
Ole elite in-game management:
:fire:No subs until 106 minutes and it was fucking Fred
:fire:Kept Rashford on after a 3/10
:fire:Subbed Pogba off when we needed a goal
:fire: Need a goal and he changes a CB
:fire: Played for pens against 7th best side in Spain

There were big deficiencies in the plan today, our execution was generally poor throughout and our in-game management should’ve been better.
Yet, here we are.

That defeat is on Solskjaer and not De Gea. Shocking game management, not reactive, no energy. He’s had a good season but that game is all the evidence that you need to see. Man Utd won’t progress with him in the job.

In game management 0/10

Ole 100% shit game management. Forget the pens

In game management from Ole was poor, the players were poor, we missed Maguire more than anything and Henderson should’ve played

Ole in game management, player selections been my biggest critique this season.
Made one sub? Greenwood off?
Baffled me but I’m here for the entire backlash and heat if it pays off.

Villarreal deserved that wayyyyy more. Ole’s in game management is genuinely shocking, that needs to change – players outside of the starting 11 need to be trusted to deliver

Villareal deserved it. First to every ball, wanted it more, shocking in game management from Ole and I want him to succeed. I’m gutted….congrats @VillarrealCF.

Rashford staying on was of particular bafflement to many United fans, and neutrals, with the forward struggling to find form throughout the game.
Greenwood posed the side’s greatest threat for much of the match but found himself subbed off, as did certain penalty taker Pogba, although the team did score 10 of their 11 spot kicks.
Even Solskjaer’s decision not to take De Gea off before the shoot out was questioned. Extra time brought an extra sub and the former Atletico Madrid keeper’s penalty record is a poor one.
He hasn’t saved a penalty since 2016 when he saved one from Romelu Lukaku, who has since joined the club and left, whilst Dean Henderson has saved eight in that same spell.
