Gareth Southgate Omits Jesse Lingard From England Squad
Jesse Lingard is set to miss out on England’s Euro 2020 squad this summer, despite his excellent spell on loan at West Ham since January.
Lingard regained his place in the England squad back in March, thanks to his impressive time away from Manchester United in the second half of the season.
That earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s extended squad for this summer’s tournament, and a real chance of making the final 26.
However, with the squad set to be announced later today, the Athletic has revealed that the 28-year-old is set to be one of the seven players cut from the initial 33 man provisional squad called up last week.
Lingard’s fellow Manchester United teammate Mason Greenwood is also set to miss out. The 19-year-old had a similar boost in the second half of the season and was thought to be one of the men to profit from an increase from the usual 23 man squads.
However the 19-year-old has pulled out of the squad due to a pre-existing injury, the injury also kept him out of the Euro Under 21 tournament back in March, when England were knocked out at the group stage.
