Footage Of Trent Alexander-Arnold Playing In Midfield For Liverpool’s Youth Team Shows He Can Shine In That Position

Footage Of Trent Alexander-Arnold Playing In Midfield For Liverpool’s Youth Team Shows He Can Shine In That Position

Despite huge doubts over whether he would make the team or not, the Liverpool-born defender was named in England’s 26-man squad on Tuesday alongside three other right-backs; Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker and Reece James.

Southgate has since said it is “unlikely” that Alexander-Arnold will venture away from his usual position, although he did previously hint that the 22-year-old could play in midfield for the Three Lions this summer.

Last week, when speaking about his options at full-back, Southgate said: “I just see four good footballers. Trippier can play right-back or left-back, Trent can play right-back, wing-back… I think he can play in midfield.”

Alexander-Arnold is no stranger to playing further forward. During his time in Liverpool’s youth system, he was often deployed centrally, even drifting out wide on a number of occasions.

As you can see in the below compilation, Trent looks a natural in those areas, carrying the ball from deep before spraying the ball around with his renowned passing ability.

Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips, Jordan Henderson and Jude Bellingham will likely feature for England in the coming weeks but this clip just shows how dangerous the England international could potentially be in those midfield pockets.

Paul Merson believes we might just see Alexander-Arnold play in midfield during England’s upcoming friendlies against Austria and Romania.

“The squad he’s picked is heavy on defenders and forwards, and very light in midfield,” the former Arsenal said via The Daily Star.

“Jordan Henderson and Kalvin Phillips are touch and go, and Declan Rice isn’t long back from an injury.

“Maybe that’s why he’s talking about Trent Alexander-Arnold playing there in an emergency – we might even see it in one of the friendlies next week.
