Emmanuel Inaugurates 5.1Km Murtala/Market Square Road in Oron
- Says ferry services from Oron to Calabar to hit waterways soon
- Dismises rumour of defection
As part of activities lined-up to mark the 6th anniversary of his administration, Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has Inaugurated the newly reconstructed 5.1 kilometre market square/murtala way in Oron Local Government Area.
The ceremony, took place Tuesday at Market Square Road, Oron Urban.
Performing the inauguration, the Governor said, he was in the area to renew his social contracts with the entire Oro Nation, and to also reassure them that no project undertaken by his administration will be abandoned.
According to the Governor, ” I stand here to renew my social contracts with the entire Oro Nation, and to also reassure you that we would not leave office until we complete all our promises “.
On securing the coastal areas, the governor said ” We have about 129 km of coastal lines, and I am aware of the security challenges in our water ways and riverine communities, but I want to assure you that with the report available to me, the entire marine territory would be taken care of very soon. We are also working with the marine police to ensure that the protection we will offer this time around would be elaborate,” he added .
Speaking on the commencement of ferry services from Oron to Calabar, Governor Emmanuel said, ” I want to also announce to you that we are currently working on a partnership deal with a private sector partner to ensure that we commence in ernest, our ferry services from Oron to Calabar to ease transportation ” .
” Again, I want to equally assure our partners that my administration will continue to give them the necessary supports, especially in the area of security so that we can actualise our set goals on this project”.
Governor Emmanuel further explained that ” Our partners are ready to set up a very big boat yard that would enable us start the ferry services, and with the commencement of that operation, the economic landscape of Oron would completely be opened for business opportunities “.
While listing the gains of his administration especially in the area of infrastructural development in the last six years, Governor Emmanuel said that he would continue to offer good governance to the citizenry, assuring that he was focused and undettered by the speculations making the rounds that he was planning a defection.
Governor Emmanuel who described the speculation as rumour and lacking in merit , said that it was a phoney attempt to hijack the state through the back door.
He urged the people to disregard the rumour, and continue to suppor the programmes of his administration and by extention, his political party, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.
Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Prof. Eno Ibanga said that the inauguration of projects in Oron was a clear testament to the Governor’s commitment to continue to deliver live-touching infrastructures to communities across the state.
Prof. Ibanga said, ” What we are seeing here today in Oron is part of the campaign promises of the Governor, and we are here to Inaugurate this road to make sure that we are bringing development that will posotively affect the people of Oron ”.
” This Oron Road was previously 7.3m, but has now been expanded to 11m with drains at both ends to ease traffic “.
” This road would further open this area for economic activities, and most importantly also, it would address the erosion challenges that was previously pleaging the area, especially during the raining season “.
” I want to also commend every person that played a part during the construction of this road for thier immense suppot and cooperation, from the traditional leaders to the youths and the women, we appreciate you all “. The Commissioner added .
Speaking also, the Clan Head of Idua, HRH, Edet Ekeng thanked the Governor for ameliorating the sufferings of the residents of the area as well as seafood traders, whom he said suffered untold hardship due to previous state of the road.
” Before now, we had no government presence here, but we kept faith and believed that one one day, we would be remembered , and today, you have given us that sense of belonging, and we are very appreciative of your developmental strides in Oron”.
Other dignitaries who presented goodwill messages at the event include: the Senator representing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, Eket Senatorial Zone, Mrs. Akon Eyakenyi, the Maneging Director of Wizchino Engineering Ltd, Jack Zua, and the President General of Oron Union, Bishop Etim Ante.
Highpoint of the ceremony was the cutting of tape by Governor Udom Emmanuel to mark the official inauguration the road.
