Aymeric Laporte Comp Vs Portugal On Spain Debut Showed He Stepped Up In Sergio Ramos’ Absence
Laporte, who previously represented France U19 and France U21, was named in Enrique’s 24-man squad for the forthcoming Euros.
Enrique wasted no time in handing the French-born defender his Spain international debut on Friday against Portugal at the Wanda Metropolitano.
And one fan has now produced a compilation to highlight the Spain international’s stunning highlights in the 0-0 draw against Portugal.
One fan posted: “He has a really good long-range pass that none of the other Spain defenders possess!”
A second added: “Love to see Laporte at right centre-back. He will suit [nicely] there so Dias will be at the left.”
Someone else wrote: “Pau Torres and [Eric] Garcia are also good, but Laporte is on another level.”
While a fourth fan said: “That is what he has done at City. I am sure next season he will play regularly alongside Ruben Dias.”
Laporte played first with Pau Torres in the heart of Spain’s defence and then with Eric Garcia before he was withdrawn in the 79th minute for Diego Llorente.
The City defender later said that it was a “privilege” to play his first match for Spain as he thanked Enrique for “trusting me.”
Laporte told Spanish sports channel Teledeporte: “It is a privilege to have played my [first] game with Spain.
“I am very happy and grateful to Luis Enrique for trusting me, I hope it’s the first of many more.
“I hadn’t played for a long time, I asked for the change as a precaution.”
Speaking after the match, Spain’s manager admitted he was thrilled with the defensive dynamic he saw between Laporte and Torres.
“I have seen the two starting centre-backs as sensational, they were superb,” Enrique told Spanish newspaper Marca.
“They both played a game bordering on the outstanding.”
